Is Cappadocia Worth Visiting in Winter?
Yes, if you are comfortable with cold mornings and you don't build the whole trip around one balloon flight. Expect highs of 4–6°C and lows below freezing. You may see the fairy chimneys under snow, though nobody can promise it, and far fewer people are flying. Days are short, and in 2026 balloons flew on only 9 days in January and 8 in February. This guide uses official weather data, civil aviation rules and our own tour schedules so you can decide for yourself.
How Cold Is Cappadocia in Winter?
Expect daytime highs of about 4–6°C and nights below freezing. These are long-term averages for Nevşehir (1959–2025) from the Turkish State Meteorological Service:
December: high 6.2°C, low -1.3°C, 3.1 hours of sunshine a day
January: high 4.0°C, low -3.6°C, 3.1 hours of sunshine a day
February: high 5.5°C, low -2.6°C, 4.2 hours of sunshine a day
Each of these months averages about 12 days with rain or snow. Averages hide the extremes: the record lows for these months range from -19.5°C to -23.6°C, so a cold spell can feel far harsher than these numbers suggest.
Will There Be Snow?
Possibly, but nobody can promise it. The State Meteorological Service's public page doesn't publish snow days by month, so we won't quote a percentage. With temperatures around freezing and about 12 wet days a month, snow is realistic, and January is the coldest month on average. The deepest snow on the service's record for Nevşehir is 64 cm, on 2 February 1992. If snow is the main reason for your trip, stay several nights and keep your dates flexible.
Sunrise and Daylight in Winter
Türkiye stays on UTC+3 all year, so winter mornings start late. These are our own calculated times for Göreme:
1 December: sunrise 07:39, sunset 17:20
1 January: sunrise 07:58, sunset 17:28
1 February: sunrise 07:47, sunset 18:00
For comparison, sunrise in late June is around 05:15. You get about 9.5 to 10 hours of daylight. Our day tours pick up at 09:00–09:30; if you are exploring on your own, start early. The official page for the Göreme Open-Air Museum lists opening hours of 08:00–17:00 every day, with the ticket office closing at 16:15. After the collapse near the museum entrance on 29 October 2026, check current access before you go; our guide to why fairy chimneys collapse explains what is known.
Do Hot Air Balloons Fly in Winter?
Yes, but plan for cancellations. Every flight depends on a flag decision: red and yellow flags ban flying, and a green flag leaves the final call to the pilot and operator. Under SHGM's SHT-OPS-B instruction, passenger flights can't take off when the ground wind is above 10 knots (about 18.5 km/h).
In 2026 balloons flew on 9 days in January and 8 in February, against 25 in June (SHGM data reported by Anadolu Agency). That is roughly 3 days in 10 in those two months. The same report links this year's lower count to heavy rain and wind in winter and spring, so read it as one year's result, not a forecast, and it has no December figure. Passenger numbers fall too: 21,022 in January against 73,198 in June. Over a full year, balloons flew on 223 days in 2025, and the Nevşehir Governor puts it at about 224 days a year.
Our balloon flight is listed at €245 per person for dates from December 2026 to February 2027 (checked November 2026). To book, choose a date on the tour page and the button opens WhatsApp. If weather cancels your flight, you get a 100% refund. The tour page lists one schedule: 05:00 pick-up, 06:00 take-off, back around 08:00. Balloons take off around sunrise, so expect a later start in winter and confirm your pick-up time on WhatsApp when you book. Our guide to balloon cancellations explains the flags and how to plan around them.
Which Tours Work Best in Winter?
Our day tours stay bookable through winter at the same prices. The right choice depends on how you handle cold and walking.
Red Tour (€35): Uçhisar Castle, Paşabağ, Avanos and Zelve Open Air Museum. It has no canyon hike, is listed as suitable for all ages and fitness levels, and is back at 17:00, before sunset on all three dates above.
Deluxe Green Tour (€55): Derinkuyu or Kaymaklı Underground City and a 3.5 km walk in Ihlara Valley. Take shoes with good grip, as paths can be wet or icy. Back at 17:30, just after sunset on 1 December and 1 January.
Eco Green Tour (€40): includes Nar Crater Lake, but that visit depends on weather and road conditions. Back at 18:00, after sunset on 1 December and 1 January.
Kayseri day trip (€95): for travellers staying in Kayseri. Museum tickets are not included. Back at 19:00, after sunset on all three dates.

What to Wear in Cappadocia in Winter
Dress in layers you can remove once you warm up. Take a warm coat, hat, gloves, scarf and thick socks, plus waterproof shoes with good grip. A balloon morning means standing outside around sunrise, when temperatures are at their lowest, so dress for the low rather than the daytime high. Cold also drains phone and camera batteries quickly, so keep a power bank in an inside pocket.
How to Plan a Winter Trip
Stay at least three nights: that gives you a spare morning before your departure morning. Book the balloon for your first morning. Don't book a day tour for the same morning: with sunrise close to 08:00 and about an hour in the air, you are unlikely to be back for our 09:00–09:30 tour pick-ups. If you fly, take your day tour the next day. If the flight is cancelled, ask about a day tour that same day and keep the next morning for another attempt.
